The Fretless – String Quartet

In November I had a session with The Fretless. They’re a brand new string quartet comprised of super-talented members Ivonne Hernandez, Karrnnel Sawitsky, Trent Freeman, and Eric Wright. They were meeting in Victoria to record their debut album, and since they come from Vancouver Island via Boston, Saskatchewan and Los Angeles, it made sense to have their promo photos taken while they were all in the same city. It was a freezing day, but we managed to stay warm with hot soy beverages and laughter…lots of laughter. If you head over to their website, you can hear a few tracks they recorded. I was sent three tracks to preview last evening, and it’s really good so I’m looking forward to hearing the whole album! Don’t be confused when you see the name Mile Zero…that one was on the drawing board for a while, but they are now officially ‘The Fretless‘.

A few images from a session with The Worry Birds at York Redoubt in Halifax, NS. Band members Zach Smith, Adelle Meagher, and Bhreagh MacDonald were so much fun during this shoot and kept park visitors entertained with their tunes. They’ll be working on their album during 2012, so keep your eyes peeled for the release!

No strangers to the Victoria music scene (and after performing together for many years) musicians Ivonne Hernandez and Jeremy Walsh have have finally recorded an album together! They finished in the studio a few days ago and the album has an anticipated release before April!

Woven – Halifax Band Photography

Bhreagh had mentioned prior to her session that she’d like for me to take photos of her band Woven while I was in Halifax. Made up of school teachers, these five talented women needed some promo photos to get some gigs on the go. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for show dates in the Maritimes!

MacDonald Family – St. Ann’s Bay Family Portrait Session

Bhreagh and I met way back in the days when we were both students at the Gaelic College. She’s a great fiddler and played many gigs with those of us in the Gaelic College Pipe Band at the time. We met for our session at her Aunt’s house in St. Ann’s, just around the corner from the College. Bhreagh’s brother and sister came along to the session, and although everyone was pretty tired from the Celtic Colours Festival Club the night before, we had a pretty good time kicking around the property. Speaking of kicking, Bhreagh’s daughter Ainsley is quite the Irish dancer and showed us some moves on the shed step (aka trying to stay warm). Stay tuned over the next while for another post featuring Bhreagh and her band, Woven.

Ivonne Hernandez – Grand Master Fiddling Champion

My wonderful pal/fabulous fiddler Ivonne Hernandez was back in town for a bit in between graduating from Berklee College of Music and heading out on the road. We spent a whole day gabbing at the new Caffe Fantastico location at Dockside Green a few days ago. On the drive back to my place, I directed us to a slight detour so I could take a few photos of her before we parted ways. There’s one more from this series over at Photographer Network!
